About file types supported by Stuffit Expander
File.org aims to be the go-to resource for file type- and related software information. We spend countless hours researching various file formats and software that can open, convert, create or otherwise work with those files.
If you have additional information about which types of files Stuffit Expander can process, please do get in touch - we would love hearing from you.
Users looking for a tool to extract multiple archive types may be disappointed by the bare and clumsy interface of this latest iteration of StuffIt Expander.

The utility fulfills its promise to handle more file types than past incarnations, which had been limited to .SIT and .ZIP files. According to its comprehensive Help file, StuffIt Expander 13.0.1.1 can now handle more than 30 file types, including .GZIP, .HQX, .TZ, .7z, and .UU. Unfortunately, the program is hampered by a '90s-era user interface, limited functionality, and poor integration with Windows. On opening--and every time you return to the main window--the application insists on searching your computer for all supported files. You can sort the resulting list by file name but not by size, location, or file type. You cannot open more than one archive at a time, and the application cannot automatically create a folder for the archives you do expand. In addition, there is no Windows shell integration, and contrary to the publisher description, you cannot drag files onto the application window or its icon to prompt expansion.
Of course, the one thing that StuffIt Expander does offer that other file-extraction tools don't is the capability to open StuffIt (.SITX) files, a popular Mac compression format. If you come across .SITX files regularly--or ever--you have little choice but to use this utility. Apart from using it to complete that chore, however, few users will be pleased with what this utility offers.

File Expander Mac
Decodes StuffIt and CompactPro archives, BinHex, and MacBinary. Requires System 6.0.5 or later. Smith Micro Software continues to develop Stuffit Expander for OS X. (Stuffit Expander on Wikipedia)
Expander Enhancer, that comes with DropStuff, allows Stuffit Expander to decode many additional archive kinds.
Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 works better in System 7, but still can be used in System 6. The issue in System 6 is that Stuffit Expander will only offer to expand files with the correct Macintosh file type, and files often don't have that type. But if you hold down the command key before selecting 'Expand' from the 'File' menu, Stuffit Expander will offer to expand all the contents of a folder, regardless of file type. So to expand a file, put it in a new folder, and expand that folder. (Make sure to hold down the command key before pressing the mouse button.) (That is the emulated “command key”. When running Mini vMac on Windows, for example, this normally means pressing the “Alt” key. See the keyboard documentation.)
In System 7, you can drag any file onto the Stuffit Expander application icon, regardless of file type.

Version 5.5 is the last that will run on Macintosh 680x0. It requires Color QuickDraw, and so doesn't work on a Mac Plus. It seems to work in the current (incomplete) Mini vMac Macintosh II emulation.
