First tweet i read this morning from Randy Chapman was the news that i think all Mac users have been waiting a long time for. Thought spent i little time collecting some information into a blog post on the mac client and sharing my install of the client and a quick look around.

Also Iain Smith (MVP) talks about the Mac client in the Skype show episode 10 here

Microsoft client Download link

Points to Note before you download the client.

System requirements for your MAC to use Skype for Business

  • OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) or OSX 10.12 (Sierra)
  • Outlook Mac build 15.27 (161010) required for Outlook integration

Peavey vypyr software. Office 365 and Lync / Skype for Business Server topology

Microsoft are recommending to get the latest and greatest to move to Skype for Business Online but that not an option for everyone. Cheeky Msft.

For on premise bad boys Looks like there will be new CUs for SfB Server and Lync Server to remove requirement for mobility to be deployed and also to support E911.

  • Skype for Business Server 2015 or Lync Server 2013
  • Skype for Business Server 2015 customers should at a minimum download and install the Skype for Business Server 2015 Cumulative Update version 9319.272 or higher (coming soon)
  • Lync Server 2013 Cumulative Update version 8308.973 or higher (coming soon)
  • Unfortunately Lync 2010 Server – Lync Server 2010 is not supported – There users will have continue to use the Lync for Mac 2011 client.

Mobility Requirement and Enablement

The Mac client works like a mobile client so you need mobility enabled but I also noticed the below so it looks like there will be a number CU released soon for SfB server and Lync Server which allows the Mac client to work without mobility being enabled. This is a major dependency.

  • E-911 support requires Skype for Business Server 2015 CU4 (build 9319.272 or higher, coming soon) or Lync Server 2013 CU8 HF1 (build 8309.973 or higher, coming soon).
  • Without Skype for Business Server 2015 CU4 (build 9319.272 or higher, coming soon) or Lync Server 2013 CU8 HF1 (build 8309.973 or higher, coming soon), Skype for Business on Mac requires Mobility enablement on the server side. After updating to builds 9317.272 or 8309.973, Mobility enablement will no longer be required.

Features and Functionality

The Mac client still doesn’t have the same level of features as the Windows based client unfortunately. This i can only see being worked on on future releases. I think Mac users will be very happy to have a new client but still feel they are a little behind with feature set.

Known Issues and theres a few of them

As the Skype for Business Mac client was built from the ground up there’s a number of known issues at the moment.

Big items include no E911 support and you have to have mobility deployed including reverse proxy to sign in as the Mac client works the same as a mobile client. So internal clients need to sign in via the reverse proxy so go out side the network and come back in. Not ideal but it does look like this is being worked on for the next CU or SfB and Lync Server 2013. You also need an edge server for media relay.

Modern Authentication

When i tired to sign in i had to disable two factor authentication on my office 365 for the client to sign in. I couldnt see this listed but may be one to watch out for.

Outlook integration

Requirements for Skype for Business and Outlook integration on Mac:

· Mac Outlook version 15.28 or later is required.

· Skype for Business must be running.

· Same user account needs to be signed into Outlook and Skype for Business.

Troubleshooting Outlook integration in case Contacts don’t show presence, online meetings fail to schedule, or there is no dial-in information in meeting invitation:

1. Ensure the user account is the same in Outlook and Skype for Business.

2. Restart Outlook.

3. Reinstall Skype for Business on Mac.

4. Perform clean uninstall of Lync 2010. See How to Perform a Clean Uninstall of Lync for Mac 2011 for more information.

5. Ensure Skype for Business is running and signed in.

Side-by-side installation

Side-by-side installation of Skype for Business and Lync is not supported on Mac. We recommend that you perform a clean uninstall of Lync for Mac 2011 prior to installing Skype for Business.

Cannot sign in to Skype for Business

Some Lync profiles might be different from Skype for Business on Mac profiles and can cause a discrepancy. See How to Perform a Clean Uninstall of Lync for Mac 2011 for more information.

Multiple prompts to leave meeting when pressing the hang-up button on a UC USB device

This is a known issue due to signaling with some USB devices and will be addressed in future updates.

E-911 support

Requirement: The minimum server version is Skype for Business Server 2015 CU4 (coming soon) or Lync Server 2013 CU8 HF1 (coming soon).

Issue: Skype for Business on Mac currently does not support showing a location in the UI, entering a manual location, or multiple emergency numbers. See Plan for emergency services in Skype for Business Server 2015 for more detail.

Mobility Policy required

With the release of Skype for Business Server 2015 CU4 (coming soon) and Lync Server 2013 CU8 HF1 (coming soon), we will support Skype for Business on Mac as a desktop application. This means that having a mobility policy assigned to Mac users will not be required. Until these server updates, Mobility enablement on the server side is required.

If you have Lync for Mac 2011 installed on the same Mac device, Lync for Mac might have changed the configuration. Recommend that you reinstall Skype for Business on Mac.

Received “We couldn’t send this message” error even when the messages are received by others

If you are using Skype for Business Server 2015 or Lync Server 2013, check if the following configurations are enabled:

· For Skype for Business Server 2015, enable Server Side Conversation History. Set the value for EnableIMAutoArchiving to True or False on Client Policy.

When opening the calendar tab in Skype for Business, an Exchange credential dialog box appeared

You might see this error if your UPN and SIP addresses do not match, and if AllowSaveCredentials is set to False on Mobility Policy.

Workaround: Set AllowSaveCredentials to True on Mobility Policy.

On first sign in i couldn’t sign in and i wondered if the SfB mac client doesn’t support 2 factor authentication / modern authentication. I went to Office 365 tenant and disabled two factor on my user account.

After disabling i was able to sign in ok.

So i don’t think the SfB mac client supports modern authentication yet. One to watch out for.

This article explains options for how you, the admin, can deploy the Skype for Business app to the people in your organization.

Connect with your team anywhere using clients across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android™, or bring remote participants into meeting spaces of all sizes with Skype for Business. Get the Skype for Business mobile app Enter your phone number or email address and we’ll send a download link. Install Lync for Mac 2011 - Skype for Business for Mac will be available in 2016. Until then, Lync for Mac 2011 is included with Office 365 and available for you to download and install. It works with Office 2011, Office 2016, Office 365, and Skype for Business Online. Jan 21, 2016 After the download is done, you can manually install it. If the Skype for Business desktop version is installed, you can perform the follow steps to join the meeting with Skype for Business Web App. In the meeting request, right-click or tap and hold the Join Skype Meeting link, and select Copy Hyperlink. In October, 2018, we announced a plan to offer the Skype for Business desktop app on Mac as our web-downloadable meetings client instead of Skype Meetings App, starting in December. Due to feedback from customers, we decided to postpone the change. Everything is now in place, and we will make the.

Before you deploy Skype for Business to your users, make sure you've done steps 1-3 in the article Set up Skype for Business Online. This way, Skype for Business will be set up with your domain, everyone will have their licenses, and you will have configured IM and Configure presence in Skype for Business Online for your organization.

Note

For users to install the Skype for Business app, they need to be local admins on their PC or device. Or they will need to be part of a local group that can install apps on their PC or devices. If your users aren't allowed to install software on their devices, you'll need to install the Skype for Business app for them.

For most small and medium-sized businesses

Step-by-step installation instructions: If you have a small or medium-sized business, we recommend that you simply ask your users to install the Skype for Business app on their PC. Point them to these instructions: Install Skype for Business. If they are using Macs, point them to Set up Lync for Mac 2011 for Office 365. The Skype for Business app is installed separately from the rest of the Office apps.

Office 365 ProPlus customers: If your business is using an Office 365 plan that includes Office 365 ProPlus, such as the E3 plan, the Skype for Business app is installed at the same time your users download and install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. This also means they can't uninstall Skype for Business unless they uninstall all of Office.

Choose whether to make Skype for Business available to your users

As the admin you can choose whether to make the Skype for Business app available to your users.

  • To control whether everyone in your company gets the software: Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Install my software, and then select the software you want to be available for users.

  • To control whether specific people in your company get the software: Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Users > Active users, select the person who you want to give access to the software, and then click Edit next to Product licenses Alesis io2 driver mac. and turn the license on or off.

Note

If you need to see what plans are assigned to people in your organization, sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center > Users > Active users. Select the person from the list then look under Product licenses. If you are using the classic admin center, look under Assigned license.

Manually deploying Skype for Business to your users

If you want your users to install the Skype for Business app from a location on your network instead of from the Internet, you can download the setup files. To do this go to the Manually deploy user software section of the Microsoft 365 admin center. You can then select Install and save the setup .exe file to a network location.

Another option is to download the Skype for Business Basic app for your users. You can download Microsoft Skype for Business Basic (32 or 64 Bit).

For both the full and basic Skype for Business apps, after you have downloaded the setup files, you will need to manually send (for example, in email) the network path to the users so they can run the setup program to install the app on their computer.

You can also use these downloads to deploy the Skype for Business app to your users by using your existing software deployment tools and processes.

For larger and enterprise organizations

Note

This section only applies to the Skype for Business app available through Office 365 plans. If your organization is using a volume licensed version of the Skype for Business app, which is Windows Installer-based (MSI), see Customize Windows client installation in Skype for Business Server.

In many enterprises or large organizations, users aren't allowed to install software on their computers. Instead, the IT departments deploy the necessary software to the users' computers. IT departments also might want to control the amount of Internet or network bandwidth used in their organization, so they want to install software from a nearby location on their network instead of from across the Internet or across the corporate network.

With Office 365, you have several options for deploying the Skype for Business app if you want to control where it's installed from. Some of those options include the following:

  • Download the Skype for Business app to your local network from the Microsoft 365 admin center, as described in Manually deploying Skype for Business to your users.

  • Use the Office Deployment Tool to download either Office 365 ProPlus or the Skype for Business app to your local network. Then, use the Office Deployment Tool to deploy the app to your users. The Office Deployment Tool gives you the ability to control certain aspects of the deployment, such as languages and version (32-bit or 64-bit).

  • Use your existing software deployment tools and processes, such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, to deploy Office 365 ProPlus or the Skype for Business app to your users. You can use your existing tools and processes with the Office Deployment Tool or with the software that you've downloaded from the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  2. Create the configuration.xml file to be used with the Office Deployment Tool that has the client app settings you want, such as setting the version (32-bit or 64-bit), the installation language, etc.

  3. Use the Office Deployment Tool and the configuration.xml file to download the setup files to your local or internal network from the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN).

  4. Use Office Deployment Tool and the configuration.xml to install the Office client apps, including the Skype for Business app.

Planning for updates to the Skype for Business app

Skype Meetings

As part of deploying the Skype for Business app, you need to consider how you want to get updates after Skype for Business is installed. These updates can include new features, security updates, or non-security updates, such as updates that provide stability or performance improvements. The two primary things you need to consider are :

  • Where do you want to get updates from

  • How often do you want to get feature updates

While you can control where you get updates from and how often you get feature updates, you can't choose which specific security updates or non-security updates you get.

Where to get updates from

By default, after the Skype for Business app is installed, updates will be automatically downloaded from the Internet when they are available from Microsoft. If you want more control over when updates occur or where the updates are installed from, you can use the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy to configure that.

For example, many organizations want to test updates with a group of users before deploying them throughout the organization. You can do this by using the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy to configure the Skype for Business app to get updates from a specific location on your network, instead of automatically from the Internet. Then, you can use the Office Deployment Tool to download the updates every month to your local network.

For more information about how updates work for Office 365 software, see these articles:

  • How often to get feature updates

In addition to where you get updates from, you can also control how often you get new features for the Skype for Business client. The two choices are the following:

  • Get feature updates every month, if there are new features

  • Get features updates every six months

For some organizations, they want time to test new features, so they want to get feature updates only twice a year instead of every month.

You can control how often you get feature updates by using the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy to configure the update channel. The Monthly Channel gives you feature updates monthly (approximately), while the Semi-Annual Channel gives you feature updates every six months. For more information about channels, see Overview of update channels for Office 365 ProPlus.
